Artist in Residence- Sarah Cusey
You Belong Here is excited to announce our first-ever Artist in Residence. Thanks to artist Sarah Cusey for reaching out and inquiring about this opportunity, not only for her works but also for You Belong Here. Sarah’s residency will span from August 15th - August 18th. We have a dedicated space in our studio for Sarah to observe and create.
We’re excited to see art back in the space. We hope you’ll join on us for this event in support of Sarah’s work.
Sarah Cusey - Artist Statement
In my studio there is an invitation to take risks and experiment with new ideas; it’s ok to not have all the answers. I mimic life experiences in a visual and kinesthetic way through a process-based practice of creating. As I observe my experience in the form of an art piece, I am able to see it from a new perspective and imagine possible futures. The process of making each piece is a form of meditation, which allows me to be fully present, experience rest, gain clarity, and transform over time.
During my residency at You Belong Here, I’ll be exploring themes of belonging and parallel work and play. My current materials/processes include watercolor, simple print-making, fibers, natural materials from neighborhood walks, and my daughter’s artwork and old clothing. Some sources I am currently listening to for wisdom and inspiration are:
Design for Belonging by Susie Wise
Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer
The Artist Mother podcast
The lived experiences of the students, families, and staff that make up the Monarch School community (where I have my day job)

FAQs:
Is it ok to check out what you’re doing and talk to you?
Please do! Part of my process is being fully present in a space that intentionally focuses on belonging. If you have the time and inclination to engage with me, I welcome it.
What are some questions I could ask if I’m not sure what to say?
What are you working on today?
Can you tell me about your current process of making?
How do you see the environment and community of You Belong Here influencing your work?
Tell me more about your day job. How does it impact your artwork and practice?
How does being a mother show up in your work?
Should I worry about my noise level or the noise level of my group?
Not at all. Please use the space as you normally would.
Will you be watching me/my group?
I’m an observer– my mom says I’ve been that way since I was little. I naturally take in what’s happening around me, and it inevitably influences my work. I am not planning to take any photos of others or integrate quotes into my pieces or writing. If that changes, I will always ask, and please feel free to say no.
