Thanks for being here! I, Nic Roc, Co-founder of YBH, am personally stoked that you have taken interest in being a part of such a cray curation concept, AND (most importantly) for wanting to honor WOMXN in history (or present). This is one my second curation projects with YBH, but my first ever, COLLABORATIVE ARTIST INSTALLATION, and I am excited about what we will all create together.

You’re probably still a bit confused, and unaware of what this showcase may be all about. Okay, here it is.

I wanted to find a way to get artists, activists, historians, leaders, all into one room to make a statement piece together. YBH is all about community, culture, and collaboration. What cooler way to bring us all TOGETHER to collaborate?

Remember back in the day, in like 6th grade when you had to give group presentations on the president’s of the USofA??? Your classmates came to your house and you all figured out how you were going to make this presentation work. Sally was the best writer, so she wrote the script. Juan was the actor, so he did most of the talking, Felix and you were the visual artists, so you both created the bad ass backdrop, and so on.

That’s sort of like this, but this will be cooler, and we’ll be talking about bad ass Womxn that helped shape our identities, policies, freedoms, and beyond.

Thus, I bring you my first Collaborative Artist Showcase, NASTY WOMXN’S HISTORY MONTH.

If you are “all hands in”, go ahead and click below. Or scroll down to read more.

THE DEETS:

Showcase to take place at You Belong Here, 3619 El Cajon Blvd. Opening reception Wednesday, March 18th, 2020 from 6pm - 9:30pm. Showcase will close on March 31st, 2020.

The showcase will also include a mini-film festival (partnership with Future’s Past) to aire on Saturday, March 28th, 2020. More deets to come.

Each participant will receive digtal assets to share on their social media and websites, as well as links for tickets. Tickets for opening reception will be donation, in which we will donate funds to a San Diego based foundation, doing work in equality.

THE GOAL:

Each group will pick one or more Womxn in History to honor. You’ll each have the task of telling the story of the signifigant leader, together, as a collective. Maybe this looks like one person drawing a full on mural of Frida Kahlo, and maybe another person who is a poet writes a poem about Frida’s life that is painted alongside the mural, and another creative is a yarn artist who makes a backgound of a yarn forest. There’s no limit to the imagination.

HOW IT WILL WORK:

Once you submit your application, I’ll reach out and notify you of a group meeting where we will all meet to further discuss this showcase. We will then pair creatives into groups. Once you are in a group, you’ll exchange numbers and emails, and decide how you all might plan on telling the story about your chosen Womxn of history (or present).

Your group will have one week to submit your final plans and layouts. Once plans and layouts are received as a visual sketch or digital rendering, you will be assigned final measurements of your dedicated space to create, as well as a date(s) and time to install.

Installations will take place from March 13th - 17th, from 5pm - 1am.

FAQ

I’ll actively be updating this section as questions come in. But for now, I’ll include some basics.

What if I am a singer or performer?

Not problem. We plan on having musicians with recorded songs to send us their files so we can play on opening night. Plus, we’ll want some live performances throughout opening night. Once we know who wants to be involved, we’ll be sure to create a schedule to ensure that the majority of performers can participate. AND you’ll be included on our website.

Do I need to create something new or can I use already existing art I have created?

Yes, you most definitely can use already existing works or art that you have created. I suggest communicating this to your team so they can consider a starting point for the collaborative installation.

Will YBH be paying or sponsoring the supplies?

Great question. Because there are so many different types of mediums that will be used throughout this project, YBH will be unable to finance each team. It will be the decision of the team to decide on a budget. I would highly suggest everyone pitching in, or reaching out to art stores that might consider sponsoring your materials.

Can I sell my work?

Yes. Each participating artist will have an option to sell their work. If someone is painting a mural, we will happily keep their pricing or informational resources nearby for interested clientele. Musicians can sell CDs or vinyls.

What is an acceptable type of art?

We respect all forms of art. However, we will not allow for anything graphic due to the nature of how the space is utilized throughout the day. We’d like for groups to keep the displays from being offensive, violent, or extreme.

We are unable to allow any construction within the building. So a full on installation may need to be reconsidered. Furniture pieces cannot be larger than 4ft x 3.5ft wide.

What if I cant attend the group meeting?

No problem at all. We’ll find a group for you and put you in contact with them.
